Samsung starts preparations for Tesla AI 5 chip production
Industry sources revealed on Monday that Samsung Electronics has begun preparations for foundry manufacturing The next generation artificial intelligence chip AI5. Previously, a Samsung executive posted on LinkedIn that the Tesla AI5 chip has completed tape-out, which means that the final design work before mass production of the chip has been completed. Tape-out is the final step in chip design, and fabless chip design companies will deliver the final chip design files to the wafer fab for subsequent mass production. AI5 is Tesla’s self-developed custom chip that will provide computing power support for the company’s fully autonomous driving (FSD) system, Optimus humanoid robot, and artificial intelligence data center. The post shows that the AI5 chip will use Samsung's 2-nanometer process and be put into production at Samsung's factory in Tyler, Texas, USA. It is expected to be installed on Tesla's new generation products soon. This news disclosure is the first time the market has learned about the detailed production time plan of Samsung’s OEM Tesla AI5 chip. The Taylor wafer fab is expected to start trial production later this year and officially launch mass production for core customers such as Tesla in 2027.
