Open AI plans to launch screenless AI speaker, Apple lawsuit may affect release plan
OpenAI is preparing to launch its first consumer-grade hardware product - a removable, screen-less smart speaker designed to be an AI companion in the home. The device will rely on ChatGPT and the more advanced GPT-Live voice mode to realize functions such as smart home control, media playback, information question and answer, and message reply. Different from traditional smart speakers, this product is positioned as a "computer in the AI era" and emphasizes personalization and active interaction capabilities. Its built-in cameras and sensors can sense the environment, and its movable mechanical structure is designed to create an experience of "anthropomorphic companionship". The device is equipped with a large-capacity battery, allowing users to move it around in different rooms of the home. According to reports, OpenAI’s hardware department is developing about five products, and this speaker is the first choice. It is planned to be unveiled in 2026 and officially released in 2027. This hardware plan was developed by the former Design director Jony Ive participated in the creation, and OpenAI spent $6.5 billion to acquire the company he founded last year to strengthen its hardware capabilities. However, the project is facing a legal challenge from Apple. Apple filed a lawsuit last week accusing OpenAI of systematically stealing trade secrets to advance hardware development by recruiting former Apple employees and leveraging supplier relationships. Apple is seeking an injunction that could hamper sales of OpenAI hardware. OpenAI denies the accusation and believes that the design of its speaker products is fundamentally different from Apple's existing products and does not infringe its trade secrets. The final direction of the lawsuit may become a key variable in determining whether this AI speaker can be launched as planned.
