On July 19, local time, Choi Tae-won, chairman of SK Group and chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that the demand for AI semiconductors is expected to increase by 60% to 100% in 2027 compared with this year, and the demand for storage semiconductors will increase by 50% to 60%. He pointed out that due to limited new production capacity next year, the gap between supply and demand for memory chips will further expand, and the current competition among global customers for memory chips is approaching "panic." Cui Taiyuan also said that the current price of memory chips is at an abnormally high level. If the supply cannot be expanded in time, it may suppress terminal demand and prompt new competitors to enter the market. In addition, according to a research report released by South Korea's Meritz Securities on July 19, Middle East sovereign AI investment entities such as Saudi Arabia have recently begun negotiations with Korean memory manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix on medium- and long-term procurement plans, asking about supply capabilities and quantities in the next few years. The report predicts that server DRAM contract prices in the third quarter of 2026 will increase by about 15% from the previous quarter, exceeding the market’s previous expectations of approximately 15%. Suppliers with relatively loose pricing in the second quarter will see particularly significant price increases in the second half of the year. Analysts from the investment strategy team of Ameritrade Securities released a report on the same day, characterizing the release of Dark Side of the Moon's Kimi K3 model as a medium-term positive for AI hardware demand, and recommended that investors buy AI component companies such as semiconductors and memory, while reducing their holdings of large technology stocks such as Google and Microsoft. Some analysts believe that the hardware companies that all AI business participants will eventually need to use, whether closed source or open source, will gain mid-term demand growth from the release of K3.
