New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement that a basket of core daily groceries will enjoy a 30% discount in five new city-owned supermarkets. The assortment will include all fresh produce, meats and seafood, as well as pantry staples, dairy and refrigerated items in approximately 20 categories. The statement said the discount would apply to everyone, regardless of income, and prices would be predictable and would not fluctuate from week to week like private supermarkets. According to the statement, the city expects New Yorkers to see their average grocery bill cut by 15%, or about $90 per month, or about $1,000 per year. The Mayor also issued a request for proposals (RFP) inviting qualified grocers or companies to serve as operators of one or more New York City-owned supermarkets.
