CFTC Data Show Record Aggregate Speculative Long Position in the Dollar.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission released its latest Commitments of Traders report, with data through Tuesday’s close. The report highlighted speculative positions in the foreign-exchange market. The aggregate speculative long position in the U.S. dollar surged to just over $50 billion, a record high.

Speculators sold 31,100 euro positions, 11,300 yen positions, 9,300 pound positions, 1,900 Canadian dollar positions and 2,300 Australian dollar positions. The source added an aside—“ouch!”—after the yen figure. Speculators bought 2,300 New Zealand dollar positions, along with small amounts of Swiss franc and Mexican peso positions.

Even so, the aggregate long dollar position increased by nearly $7 billion, narrowly surpassing the previous record set between 2014 and 2015.
