Musk Denies Report Tesla Is Considering Spinning Off China Business.

Tesla China said on July 31 that U.S. media reports claiming Tesla was considering separating its China business were untrue.

Musk also said on social media that the matter had never been mentioned in any discussion and called it “absurd fake news.” The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Tesla was considering separating its China business to clear the way for a potential merger between Tesla and SpaceX.

The report said some Tesla executives had been instructed to prepare for a possible separation before the merger, while Tesla’s advisers had discussed several options, including a spin-off, sale or shutdown. Tesla delivered more than 830,000 vehicles worldwide in the first half of 2026.

The Shanghai Gigafactory delivered nearly 468,000 vehicles, up 28.4% from a year earlier, while its production reached a new high for the same period in nearly three years. Since delivering its first China-made Model 3 vehicles in December 2019, the Shanghai Gigafactory has produced more than 4.5 million electric vehicles.

That represents more than 45% of Tesla’s total global production, making the facility Tesla’s largest export hub worldwide.
