Musk reportedly prepares to spend more than $100 million to support Trump allies in midterms
Elon Musk is reportedly preparing to return to the Republican Party’s political orbit, authorizing his super PAC, America PAC, to spend $100 million to $120 million on field campaign operations in at least eight states during the U.S. midterm elections, according to people familiar with the plans cited by media on Thursday. The spending would support Republican candidates seeking seats in the November midterm elections. The move would mark a renewed political push by Musk, the world’s richest person, after his relationship with Donald Trump cooled sharply about a year ago. Musk repeatedly expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Republican Party and even threatened to form a third party, but that effort went nowhere and he gradually faded from the political scene. Musk became deeply involved in politics after Trump began his campaign for president, drawing widespread criticism as he used his wealth and influence to support political causes. America PAC, which Musk founded, has authorized the spending on offline campaign-promotion projects in at least eight states, according to the report. The PAC is coordinating the effort with other Republican spending groups and has held discussions with other Republicans about the new field operation in recent weeks. Two people familiar with the PAC’s deployment plans said its first round of spending would focus on at least five Senate races: Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan and Ohio. The group is also assessing the feasibility of spending in North Carolina, Georgia and Texas. In addition, America PAC is reportedly planning to spend on House races in Washington state, Wisconsin and California. America PAC has publicly said only that it will participate broadly in campaigns in key swing districts for both chambers of Congress. It declined to disclose the size of its budget or the states it is targeting. Andrew Romeo, a spokesperson for America PAC, said the group was “excited” to contribute to Republicans’ efforts to retain majorities in Congress this fall. “President’s political team and other Republican organizations have built a first-rate operating system that will put Republicans in a strong position to break historical trends and continue controlling Congress this fall, and we’re excited to be part of that team again,” Romeo wrote in a statement. A Super PAC is a type of U.S. political organization that emerged in 2010 and is designed to influence election outcomes by raising and spending large amounts of money. In simple terms, it is a primary channel through which major donors provide funding during U.S. election campaigns. America PAC contributed more than $250 million to Trump’s 2024 reelection campaign, according to statistics cited in the report, making Musk the largest political donor in U.S. history.
