Energy and technology were the only S&P 500 sectors to rise
On Thursday, nine of the S&P 500’s 11 sectors fell, and the index traded below the flat line in afternoon trading. Energy led the gains, rising more than 1% and ranking among the only two sectors to advance. Information technology was the other sector to post a gain, up 0.3%. Real estate, materials and industrials posted the largest declines, each falling about 1%. Within the energy sector, the source says two stocks were the biggest contributors, but it does not identify them. One rose nearly 2%, while the other gained more than 1%. The moves came as oil prices climbed on Thursday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose nearly 3% to settle above $77 a barrel, while international benchmark Brent crude jumped nearly 4% to settle above $82 a barrel. Earlier this week, President Donald Trump said Exxon and Chevron were “making too much money” because oil prices were high amid the conflict in the Middle East.
