Apple Tests CXMT Memory Chips Amid AI-Driven Shortage
Apple is testing memory chips made by ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, across product lines including the iPhone and MacBook as it seeks to ease a memory shortage driven by the artificial-intelligence boom, The Wall Street Journal reported on Aug. 9. Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal said Apple has held preliminary discussions with CXMT, China’s largest chipmaker, about supplying components. The goal is to use the chips in some devices sold in China. Reuters previously reported that CXMT was considering building a second memory-chip factory in Beijing to increase production capacity. Laptop makers HP and Acer have already begun using CXMT chips in devices sold in markets outside the United States to help alleviate supply shortages, according to the report.
