Citi banker Alexander Schrantz to return to Goldman Sachs as Hong Kong IPO race heats up.

Citi Group senior banker Alexander Schrantz is moving to Goldman Sachs, according to people familiar with the matter. He will be the latest executive to leave Citi’s Hong Kong team after the head of the bank’s Asia investment-banking business departed earlier this year.

Schrantz most recently served as head of corporate finance for North Asia, Australia and South Asia and is returning to Goldman Sachs, the people said. He previously worked at Goldman for 19 years. Because the personnel move has not been made public, the people asked not to be identified. Media representatives for both banks declined to comment.

Schrantz did not respond to a request for comment. Schrantz joined Goldman Sachs in 1992, briefly worked at Barclays and moved to Citi in 2012. His departure comes as Citi tries to revive its Asia business. Data show that Citi’s ranking in Asia equity-issuance underwriting fell from No. 1 in 2024 to No. 7 this year.

Citi’s senior Asia management has undergone a series of changes ahead of the move. Jan Metzger, the bank’s co-head of investment banking in Asia, left at the end of March and joined Standard Chartered. Before that, Citi appointed a new executive to share responsibility for the Asia business with him.

Ben Ngai, Citi’s head of investment banking in Hong Kong, left in November 2025, after which Schrantz temporarily took over the role. As Hong Kong’s initial public offering market continues to heat up, competition among financial institutions for senior investment-banking talent is intensifying.

Schrantz was also recently appointed to a Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing committee responsible for approving IPOs.
